London Activists Replace Picasso’s ‘Motherhood’ with Palestinian Mother’s Portrait in Protest

Source: The Telegraph

Activists from the Youth Demand group replaced Pablo Picasso’s iconic “Motherhood” painting at the National Gallery in London with a powerful portrait of a Palestinian mother holding her injured child. The protest occurred in Room 43 of the gallery, where the activists temporarily covered Picasso’s 1901 canvas with the image, which was captured by photojournalist Ali Jadallah during an Israeli attack on Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital in 2023.

The activists, 23-year-old NHS worker Jai Halai and 21-year-old politics student Monday-Malachi Rosenfeld, were arrested after the gallery administration swiftly removed the portrait. The protest is part of a campaign demanding a two-way arms embargo on Israel, accusing the UK of facilitating Israeli actions in Gaza by supplying arms.

As part of the protest, red paint was thrown on the gallery floor to symbolize the bloodshed in Gaza. The activists emphasized the ongoing suffering of Palestinians and urged the UK government to take immediate action by halting arms sales to Israel.
