On Friday, authorities in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, have taken the first symbolic step towards the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage by raising the Kiswa, the cloth covering the Holy Kaaba.

Millions ready for Hajj 2024!

This annual tradition signifies the official preparation period for Hajj. During the ceremony, the existing Kiswa was raised by three meters. To protect the exposed lower portion of the Kaaba, a white cotton cloth (Ihram) was draped around the base. It is a practice repeated every year.

A team of specialists from the King Abdul Aziz Complex, responsible for maintaining the Kaaba, conducted the raising of the Kiswa.

The complete changing of the Kiswa, a black cloth adorned with verses from the Quran woven in gold and silver thread, will take place later in the year, on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. This practice was temporarily adjusted in 2022 but will resume its traditional timing for Hajj 2024.
