Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has claimed that the Biden administration pressured the company to censor COVID-19 content during the pandemic.

In an August 26 letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated that senior White House officials repeatedly pushed Meta to remove certain content about COVID-19, including humor and satire. He noted that the administration was frustrated when Meta did not comply.

Zuckerberg expressed regret for not speaking out sooner about the pressure Meta faced and for the decisions to remove content from Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. He admitted that the company eventually changed its COVID-19 policies due to this external pressure.

“I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it”, Zuckerberg wrote. He also stressed that Meta should not compromise its content standards due to political pressure and is ready to resist such actions in the future.
