Q&A with Zeina Nassr
  • Can you share a bit about your musical journey? What inspired you to pursue piano professionally?

I began my musical journey at the age of six, driven by a passion that was nurtured by my supportive family, who continuously encouraged me to improve. At just eight, I performed on stage for the first time, and from that moment on, I started attracting the attention of music professionals and conductors, who offered me incredible opportunities to grow and showcase my talent.

  • What unique challenges do you face as a pianist performing in the UAE? How does the local music scene influence your performances?

Challenges are inevitable in every career. For me, the greatest challenge was gaining recognition in the field at a young age while appealing to a diverse audience through performances in various genres. However, I am best known for my Arabic music, a reflection of my Syrian heritage. This has given me deep insight into the classical and traditional songs that people continue to cherish and love.

  • Do you incorporate any Middle Eastern musical elements into your performances? How do you blend different cultural influences in your music?

I always strive to perform songs in a unique and distinctive way, infusing them with my own sense of style and emotion. For example, I often blend pop songs with a jazz twist or incorporate classical music elements into Arabic songs, creating a fresh and personal interpretation that resonates with my artistic vision.

  • How do you prepare for a live performance? What does your pre-show routine look like?

I am a very detail-oriented person, carefully studying the environment before each performance to determine the most fitting style and emotions to convey. I also invest significant time in selecting a look that complements the aesthetic and theme of the event, often choosing dresses that enhance the overall experience. Of course, I am always practicing and preparing fresh pieces to ensure each performance feels new and engaging.

  • What has been your most memorable performance so far, and what made it stand out?

Throughout my experience, I’ve had many unforgettable moments, but one of the most unique was during last year’s RAK Art Festival. I was performing outdoors when it suddenly began to rain. The combination of the piano’s melody, the raindrops, and the distant thunder created a magical atmosphere, making it a truly one-of-a-kind performance.

  • As a live pianist, do you prefer playing solo or collaborating with other musicians? Why?

I enjoy both solo and group performances, but it really depends on the event. If I’m playing in a calm, intimate setting where classical or soft music is best suited, I prefer performing solo to fully immerse myself and the audience in the moment. On the other hand, performing with a band or as part of a duo brings a different kind of energy and joy, adding a lively and collaborative spirit to the event.

  • How do you select the repertoire for your performances? Do you lean toward classical pieces, contemporary works, or your own compositions?

Most people tend to enjoy something familiar, a piece they’ve heard before and can connect with. However, I believe it’s essential to infuse each performance with my personal touch, ensuring that my unique style comes through, even in well-known pieces. Additionally, whenever possible, I aim to incorporate my own compositions, offering something unique and personal to the audience.

Today, Zeina continues to inspire with her performances, contributing to the vibrant musical culture of Dubai. Her dedication, talent, and passion for piano have positioned her as one of the most promising figures in the UAE’s classical music scene, drawing admiration from both peers and audiences alike.
