Shortly after the news broke of Barrister Murtaza Wahab’s victory in the Karachi mayoral elections, tensions escalated between supporters of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Clashes erupted outside the Arts Council in Karachi, where the voting process had been taking place. According to unofficial reports, Wahab secured 173 votes, emerging as the winner, while JI’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman stood as the runner-up.

Despite the unofficial results, an official announcement is still pending. Nevertheless, the announcement triggered immediate confrontations between JI and PPP workers. Footages revealing large groups of supporters hurling stones at security personnel, who valiantly defended themselves with riot shields are circulating on social media.
