NASA Offers $3 Million for Innovative Solutions to Recycle Trash in Space

Source: Bold Business

NASA has announced the LunaRecycle Challenge, a $3 million competition inviting innovators to develop efficient recycling technologies for space missions. The challenge is a part of NASA’s Centennial Challenge, aimed at finding sustainable solutions for managing waste on the Moon.

As NASA works toward long-duration human space travel, particularly through the Artemis missions, it seeks novel ways to process waste like food packaging, clothing, and scientific experiment materials. The goal is to recycle these discarded items into usable materials, supporting sustainable lunar exploration.

The competition features two tracks: the Prototype Build track, focusing on hardware components for recycling on the lunar surface, and the Digital Twin track, which involves designing a virtual replica of a recycling system. Both tracks offer participants a share of the $3 million prize.
