As Pakistan’s current legislature, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approaches the completion of its five-year term on August 12, the nation is gearing up for the next general election in October. However, with the term coming to an end, the ruling coalition has clarified that no names have been shortlisted yet for the crucial position of interim prime minister.

‘No names shortlisted’

Contrary to claims made by the local media, both major coalition partners, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have denied finalizing any candidates for the caretaker PM post.

Moreover, Faisal Karim Kundi, PPP’s central information secretary and a member of Sharif’s cabinet, echoed this sentiment, stating that no names had been shared with his party yet. Both parties’ committees are scheduled to convene next week to deliberate on potential nominees and reach an agreement.

The appointment of a caretaker prime minister is a critical step in ensuring a smooth transition of power and a fair electoral process. As the coalition partners continue their discussions, the nation awaits the final decision on this crucial matter.
