Pakistan’s latest census reveals a population surge to 241.49 million, making it the fifth most populous nation globally. Conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the digital census results were unveiled in Islamabad.

The population growth rate stands at an alarming 2.55%, with projections indicating a doubling by 2050. This growth rate is one of the highest globally, especially among the top 30 countries, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal expressed concern over the rapid increase, highlighting the strain on the country’s limited resources and its adverse effects on per capita income and living conditions.

The data shows that 67% of the population is under 30, with significant rural-to-urban migration leading to rapid urbanization. Despite a slight increase in literacy rates, 25 million children remain out of school, highlighting the country’s ongoing education crisis.
