Pakistan Set To Launch 5G Services In July-August 2024: Dr. Umar Saif

Earlier today, Caretaker Federal Minister for IT and Communication, Dr. Umar Saif, announced that 5G services would soon be launched in Pakistan. Reports suggest that the official launch is expected by the middle of 2024 in July – August when the government will also auction 300MHZ of spectrum.

To avoid any risk, Pakistan’s optic fiber network will have to be extended before the launch of 5G services. As per stats, only 6,000 mobile towers out of 56,000 nationwide are connected to optic fiber cables in Pakistan which is a major concern.

This step is taken to pave the way for the development of Pakistan’s IT industry to stay updated about the IT and communication sector. Expressing his mission, Dr. Umar Saif stated that Pakistan is on the graph of exporting 2.5 million cell phones, earning about $200 million a year.

In the past two years, about 9 million mobile phones have been assembled in Pakistan and released into the market, worth 1.5 billion dollars. Still, the government is working to promote the manufacturing of cellular devices in the country for growth in the relevant sectors.

As technological advancements are taking place quickly, many globally operated communications provide services through low-orbit satellites. With 5G expanding worldwide, it is much needed for Pakistan to moderate the telecommunication industry’s development policy.
