PIA On The Verge Of Shutdown, Cancels More Than 300 Flights Due To Fuel Shortage

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national carrier of Pakistan, finds itself teetering on the brink of a shutdown, facing what might be its most challenging crisis in history. Over the past 10 days, PIA has been forced to cancel more than 300 flights due to a severe shortage of fuel and a looming financial crisis, confirmed by a spokesperson for the airline.

PSO cuts off fuel supply

The primary trigger for this crisis is the decision by Pakistan State Oil (PSO) to cut off fuel supplies to PIA due to unpaid dues. The fuel supply cut-off has led to the cancellation of 322 flights, 134 of which were international routes, since October 14. The situation took a turn for the worse on Tuesday when an additional 51 flights were canceled, including 27 on domestic routes.

PIA’s management is currently in damage control mode, scrambling to accommodate affected passengers on alternative flights. The spokesperson expressed sincere apologies for the disruptions and inconveniences caused by these cancellations.

This dire situation not only impacts the airline’s reputation but also raises concerns about the future of Pakistan’s national carrier. The government and stakeholders must urgently address the financial woes and unpaid dues to ensure the survival of PIA and maintain a vital link for travelers across Pakistan and beyond.
