Powerful 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near China-Kyrgyzstan Border

The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported that earlier this morning, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck along the China-Kyrgyzstan border. The quake reportedly hit Wushu County in Aksu prefecture during the late hours of last night. Moreover, about 200 rescuers were also dispatched to the epicenter.

International media reports suggest that the earthquake hit a rural area populated mainly by Uyghurs. Moreover, further reports reveal that six people have been injured, and more than 120 homes have been damaged or collapsed in such freezing temperatures.

Affecting China and its three neighbors

Tremors were felt in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan as well. Kazakhstan’s Emergencies Ministry reports a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck near the border of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China on Tuesday. The ministry said the epicenter of the earthquakes was in Kyrgyzstan, about 264 kilometers southeast of Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city.

According to the ministry, a 5.0-magnitude quake was felt in Almaty. This earthquake is also believed to be the strongest in the past few years, seriously frightening the locals. Two residential houses and livestock sheds collapsed in the area near the epicenter, in rural Wushi County while electricity was temporarily shut down.

Authorities launched an emergency response involving over 200 rescue workers as well as dozens of fire engines and other necessary equipment. However, landslides are common in Yunnan, a far-flung and often impoverished region of China where steep mountain ranges butt against the Himalayan plateau.

The disaster occurred in a rural area surrounded by towering peaks dusted with snow, state media footage showed.
