Earlier today, the inaugural session of Pakistan’s newly elected National Assembly commenced today amidst controversy and fervent displays of loyalty to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s incarcerated leader, Imran Khan.

Despite the President’s refusal, the assembly secretariat summoned the session, setting the stage for an unexpected protest by PTI lawmakers. Clad in masks bearing the likeness of Imran Khan, PTI MPs flooded the assembly, adorned with posters of their leader and chanting slogans for his release.

This demonstration of solidarity with Khan reflects the party’s struggle to navigate a post-Khan era, following his removal from the prime ministerial post in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote. Despite setbacks, PTI secured victory in recent general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, albeit with candidates running as independents.
