Scientists Develop Self-Extinguishing Lithium Battery That Can Put Out Its Own Fire

Scientists have developed a revolutionary new design for rechargeable batteries that can prevent fires and explosions caused by overheating. The breakthrough is set to make lithium-ion batteries safer for use in electronics and electric vehicles.

A safer spark for all your devices

Researchers made this breakthrough by replacing the highly combustible electrolyte (a substance that allows electric charge to flow between the battery terminals) with materials found in a commercial fire extinguisher. The conventional electrolyte is composed of a lithium salt and an organic solvent, both flammable and prone to thermal runaway which can cause a fire or explosion.

In contrast, the new electrolyte is nonflammable, heat-resistant, and compatible with any battery chemistry. It can function over a wide temperature range from minus 100 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit and effectively extinguishes internal fires by transferring heat away from the battery.

The researchers subjected their batteries to various tests, including the nail penetration test which simulates an internal short circuit that can cause a fire or explosion. Their batteries withstood the impact without catching fire, making them significantly safer than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

This development can potentially make rechargeable batteries safer and more durable, thereby reducing the inherent risks of overheating and thermal runaway. The researchers will continue exploring more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives for their electrolytes.

From electric vehicles to cell phones, safe and reliable rechargeable batteries are gradually becoming a necessity. This breakthrough will surely provide a much-needed solution and we can expect to see this technology implemented in the future.
