Your face will be your passport: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to roll out facial recognition technology for travelers in 2023, as part of its efforts to enhance security measures at airports and immigration points. The move comes as the UAE seeks to increase its capacity to process passengers in a faster and more efficient way, while at the same time ensuring the highest levels of security.
How will facial recognition technology help?
The facial recognition system, which will be deployed across all airports and immigration points in the country, will allow for the swift and accurate identification of passengers as they move through the different stages of their journey. This will help to reduce waiting times, improve passenger experience and enhance security levels.
“We have completed 50 percent of the facial recognition project and it is in the final phase of integration with the immigration and airline systems. We expect to roll out face recognition in the fourth quarter of 2023”, stated Sheikh Faisal bin Saoud Al Qassimi, director of Sharjah Airport Authority.

UAE at the forefront of adopting new technologies
The system will use advanced algorithms to match the passenger’s facial features with their biometric data, which will be stored in a secure database. This data will be cross-checked with information from other government agencies to ensure the highest levels of security and to prevent any potential threats.
The UAE has been at the forefront of adopting new technologies to improve its services and infrastructure, and the deployment of facial recognition technology is another step in this direction. With its advanced infrastructure and innovative approach, the UAE is set to become a leader in the use of facial recognition technology for travel and security purposes.
