South Korea Introduced as North Korea at Paris Olympics 2024

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has apologized for an error during the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony. South Korean athletes were mistakenly introduced as representing North Korea. On July 26, as the South Korean team made their entrance down the Seine River, they were incorrectly announced with the official title of North Korea: “Republique populaire democratique de Coree” in French and “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” in English.

The IOC promptly issued an apology on their official Korean-language X account, acknowledging the mistake and expressing regret. In response, South Korea’s National Olympic Committee plans to meet with both the Paris Olympics Organizing Committee and the IOC to file a formal protest. They aim to ensure such an error does not happen again and will send an official letter of protest from their delegation leader.

This mix-up occurs amid heightened tensions between the two Koreas, with recent military activities escalating the situation.
