In a recent development, a collaborative effort by the Sindh Department of Information Technology and a team of experts has revealed the exceptional potential of Thar desert sand for chip layer production.

This discovery holds immense significance, as it could address the surging demand for computer chips in the digital age. Experts believe that utilizing Thar sand can significantly contribute to fulfilling this market need.

Chip hope in Thar desert?

The Sindh Department of Information Technology has presented proposals to both federal and provincial authorities, advocating for the establishment of a dedicated silicon chip wafer foundry. The production process for these wafers requires coal, sand, water, and electricity, and Thar sand has been identified as the ideal component for this purpose.

The estimated cost of establishing this chip wafer foundry is $450 million. There’s a possibility that this project could be incorporated within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. Additionally, a 150-acre plot of land in Islamkot, Tharparkar, has been designated as the potential site for the factory.

The Sindh Information Technology Department has taken the initiative to complete the initial documentation for the Chip Wafer Foundry project and has forwarded it to the relevant ministries for careful consideration.
