Pakistan is all set to elect its 14th president today as the polling has finally concluded. The presidential election is being held through a secret ballot. The voting session began earlier at 10 am and concluded at 4 pm today.

Asif Ali Zardari, the joint candidate of PPP and the PML-N and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC)’s candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai are the two main contenders running for the office of President.

Zardari vs Achakzai: Who will win?

As per reports, the President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of the Senate, National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies.

A joint session was held at the parliament house in Islamabad today. In the session, the members of the National Assembly and the Senate exercised their right to vote. Similarly, the provincial assemblies are also holding their sessions today for the election.

Interestingly, Achakzai has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone the election, labeling the electoral college as “incomplete.”

“As yet, no one was elected on the reserved seats. And without nominations and proper election on these seats, if the presidential election is conducted as per the schedule, that would be a denial of their vote. Which otherwise is against the fundamental rights, law, and constitution,” read Achakzai’s letter.

With a majority in all assemblies and the Senate, it looks like PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is set to become President of Pakistan for the second time.
