Over 60 US Lawmakers Urge Biden to Advocate for Imran Khan’s Release and Safety

Source: NBC News

More than 60 members of the United States House of Representatives have sent a letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to use Washington’s influence to secure the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The former Prime Minister has been incarcerated since August last year following his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case and other charges, all of which he denies.

The Democratic lawmakers highlighted the need to prioritize human rights in US policy toward Pakistan. In the letter, they stated, “We urge you to use the United States’ substantial leverage with Pakistan’s government to secure the release of political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Khan, and to address widespread human rights abuses.”

Additionally, the lawmakers requested that US embassy officials be allowed to visit Khan, who is currently imprisoned at Adiala Jail, as concerns over his safety grow ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming elections on February 8.
