Elon Musk Sues OpenAI & CEO Sam Altman Over Deviation From Original Mission, Citing Profit Motives

Source: Mashable

In a surprising turn of events, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has sued OpenAI, the startup he co-founded in 2015, for allegedly abandoning its original mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity and not for profit.

OpenAI sued over profit focus!

The lawsuit filed in San Francisco accuses OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, of breaching their contract by focusing on making money instead of working on artificial general intelligence (AGI) that would benefit humanity. Musk claims that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman originally approached him to make an open-source, non-profit company.

OpenAI had released its most powerful language model, GPT-4, as essentially a Microsoft product, according to the lawsuit. Musk is seeking a court ruling that would compel OpenAI to make its research and technology available to the public and prevent the startup from using its assets, including GPT-4, for the financial gains of Microsoft or any individual.

The billionaire entrepreneur has also mounted a rival AI effort with his startup, xAI, that aims to challenge OpenAI. The startup started rolling out its ChatGPT competitor, Grok, for Premium+ subscribers of social media platform X in December and aims to create what Musk has said would be a “maximum truth-seeking AI.”

This move by Musk is expected to have an impact on AI development inside or outside of OpenAI, and how this legal battle unfolds in the coming days remains to be seen.
