In a recent country risk report by Business Monitor International (BMI), part of the Fitch credit ratings agency, it has been predicted that PTI leader Imran Khan, would likely stay incarcerated despite recent legal successes.

The report, obtained by Dawn.com, provides insights into Pakistan’s macroeconomic and political landscape, projecting trends up to 2033.

Khan saw his sentence in the Toshakhana case suspended on April 1 and was acquitted of charges in the cipher case by the Islamabad High Court in June. Despite these victories, new legal challenges emerged, including a fresh arrest by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a different Toshakhana case.

BMI’s analysis states, “Despite winning recent legal appeals, we expect Imran Khan to remain in prison for the foreseeable future”. The report highlights the government’s likely continuation of pursuing legal avenues against Khan.

On the political front, BMI anticipates the Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition to maintain power for the next 18 months, supported by institutional backing and a subdued response from Khan’s supporters.

Economically, the report forecasts Pakistan’s GDP growth to average 3.5% over the next decade, cautioning against risks such as agricultural decline, currency fluctuations, and ongoing political instability.
