KFC Shuts Down Over 100 Outlets Across Malaysia Due To Pro-Palestine Boycotts

KFC’s Malaysia dream is hitting a crispy snag. Over 100 popular fried chicken chain outlets have been forced to close their doors temporarily. It’s all linked to a month-long boycott campaign protesting US support for the recent Israel-Gaza conflict.

No more KFC in Malaysia

According to reports, QSR Brands, the owner of KFC franchises in Malaysia, has shuttered more than 100 of its 600 stores nationwide. Most closures are concentrated in the Muslim-majority Kelantan state, where the boycott seems to be strong.

The fast-food giant downplayed the situation in an official statement, citing “challenging economic conditions” as the reason for closures. They assured employees they’ve been offered opportunities to relocate to busier stores. However, many believe the economic pressure directly results from the boycott campaign.

This isn’t the first time US fast-food chains have felt the heat in Malaysia. Earlier this year, McDonald’s faced a similar backlash with their sales taking a significant hit, particularly in Muslim-majority nations. Interestingly, McDonald’s Malaysia even sued a pro-Palestinian group for “defamatory statements” related to the boycott.

The situation highlights the growing influence of consumer activism, particularly when it aligns with strong social and political sentiments. In Malaysia’s case, the support for Palestine and condemnation of the Gaza conflict has translated into a powerful boycott movement, impacting the bottom line of major US corporations.

The story doesn’t end there. Starbucks, another American brand, reportedly suffered record losses after a pro-Palestinian social media post and subsequent legal tussle with its employee union. With KFC Malaysia facing a similar fate, one thing is clear: consumer voices are getting louder, and companies operating in a globalized world can no longer ignore the power of a well-organized boycott.
