Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Mongolia next week at the invitation of Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, marking his first trip to the country in a decade. The visit coincides with the 85th anniversary of the Soviet and Mongolian victory over Japan at the Khalkhin Gol River.

This trip comes despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March 2023 against Putin over charges related to the war in Ukraine. As an ICC member, Mongolia is technically obligated to arrest him upon arrival. However, experts suggest that Mongolia is unlikely to enforce the warrant, and there would likely be no significant repercussions if they did not.

The visit is seen as a diplomatic move amidst ongoing tensions between Russia and the West. It underscores Mongolia’s delicate position in balancing its international obligations and its diplomatic relations with Russia.
