In a recent development, two men in Sweden are set to face trial for burning the Quran multiple times during protests last year, actions that sparked widespread outrage across the Muslim world.

Swedish prosecutors announced earlier this week that Salwan Momika and Salwan Najem have been charged with “offences of agitation against an ethnic or national group” for their repeated desecration of the Quran on four separate occasions.

The charges against the men stem from incidents where they burned the Quran and made derogatory remarks about Muslims, including one particularly provocative act outside a mosque in Stockholm.

These actions, which took place during the summer of 2023, inflamed tensions in Muslim-majority countries, prompted Sweden to bolster its security measures, and strained the nation’s diplomatic relations with the Middle East.

Senior Prosecutor Anna Hankkio stated that both men are being prosecuted for expressing contempt for Muslims through their actions and remarks. “In my opinion, the men’s statements and actions fall under the provisions on agitation against an ethnic or national group, and it is important that this matter is tried in court”, Hankkio emphasized.

The prosecution’s case relies heavily on video evidence, which reportedly captures the men committing these acts. The trial is expected to address the legal implications of their actions and the broader societal impact they have had.
